D. Ryan Mowry is NOT a doctor, but he has played on on TV. Ryan has been a creative his whole life, drawing and writing stories from a young age. He always enjoyed movies, but it was upon seeing Reservoir Dogs (and subsequently Clerks, The Toxic Avenger, and El Mariachi) that he really realized that he wanted to MAKE movies, not just watch them.
While living in Kaiserslautern, Germany, as a military brat he partnered up with his friend Elisa to create SB-Films (initially Sneuwbal Films). Together they wrote and shot a short film about the stupid things you do while waiting, knuckleheads., guerilla style on the streets of K-Town. Ryan then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the video but the audio never made the trip! Not long after, Elisa also moved to NM, and Sneuwbal Films became SB-Films.
Ryan and Elisa worked with the local cable access TV station to create a sketch comedy show (which was later re-editied to a one hour feature) called Time Has Come. At the same time, Ryan and Elisa were writing and working on short films, like Spanking the Monkey and Nacht van de Duivel DVD Speler. Ryan was working as a manager of a Hollywood Video (oh how we miss you Hollywood!!!) and recognized that the two types of films he could not keep in stock were zombie movies and stoner comedies, so he wrote a zombie stoner comedy, After the End, about a pair of pothead buddies who survived WWIII because they happen to live in a bomb shelter. Eventually SB-Films lost access to the equipment with only about 45 minutes of footage finished, so Ryan editied it together as After the End, act I so that it could at least be seen. Both Time Has Come and After the End, act I played at Troma's TromaDance New Mexico film festival.
Ryan also worked on a few features (Just Buried, aka the horribly chopped and messed with Wedding Slashers & the highly underrated Gimme Skelter) with a friend, Scott, and was able to gain incredible experience doing so, and felt ready to move on to try another full length story. After seeing one of his shorts at TromaDance, Ryan was approached by a man named Steve who had written a campy comedy and asked if Ryan would direct it. After getting the ok to re-write the script, Ryan and Steve paired up on what would be a nearly 5 year long journey to get Defective Man! made. Together they made a full-length campy comedy with a cast of 50+ and locations all throughout Albuquerque and Rio Rancho for under $5,000. After more than a year of editing, Defective Man! premiered at The Guild Theater May 29th 2010. Ryan tried for a long time to get distribution for the film, which resulted in a lot of nice rejection letters, simultaneously praising the film's humor while pointing out that just can't hear it very well.
The Monday after Defective Man! played, Ryan moved from Albuquerque to San Antonio, Texas. Here he met up with Seth and Sublimation Sinema, and re-created a film that he had tried to make once before, CLUSTER. (watch it below!) The short, an art-horror film which is a visual metaphor for debilitating pain, premiered at the Oshkosh Horror Film Festival in Oshkosh WI, and played at the FANtastic Horror Film Festival in San Diego CA, where CLUSTER's The Pain was nominated for best actor, even though he had NO lines! This was the only film Ryan was able to make while in Texas, as he was focusing on his career rather than art, and he took back up writing reviews at Ryan's Reviews during this time. He originally started writing low and no budget reviews in NM, after he got a horrible review of After the End that made absolutely zero concessions for the complete lack of budget the film had.
In 2022, Ryan and his family moved to Aurora, Colorado, and he met up with Drew at Ghoul's Night Productions. Together they are going to make Ryan's next short, Mile 173, a script originally written when Ryan lived in NM. He updated it with plans to make it in San Antonio, before the decision was made to make the move to the mountains.
Now Ryan has a short in pre-production with an additional one written and ready to go. He is also working with a couple different friends on a couple different projects and ideas, which will show up here once they are more concrete. Please keep up with Dr. M's for updates!
